Color Problems with Skin

We all desire an even complexion, yet there are many issues that can impact the color of your skin. The color of your skin is primarily determined by a pigment named melanin, which is made by melanin-producing cells called Melanocytes. Damage to these Melanocytes thus impacts your body’s production of melanin and may cause Dark Spots or White Spots.

Dark spots

When your Melanocytes produce too much melanin, you skin gets darker. When your skin is exposed to the sun, your body naturally increases its production of melanin. That means that dark spots can become more pronounced with extended sun exposure.

White spots

Conversely, when your body stops producing melanin, your skin gets lighter. When a particular spot completely ceases making melanin, the area loses all pigment, creating a white spot.

While in many cases, dark spots and white spots are benign, they should be examined by a professional to ensure that they are not a sign of a more serious illness, such as the skin disorder vitiligo. Cosmetic solutions can also reduce their impact on your appearance.
