Pigmented lesions such as brown spots, age spots, large freckles, or flat pigmented birthmarks are caused by an increase in the production of cells known as melanocytes that increase melanin in the skin. These darker areas of the skin can be treated by a laser that targets  melanin at variable depths on or in the skin. The Palmetto Skin & Laser Center uses the Candela GentleLase Plus 755nm Alexandrite Laser to treat uneven pigmentation and sun damage.

How does the laser work?

This type of laser, called a Alexandrite Laser, works by delivering an intense beam of light that is precisely tuned to target the pigment in your skin (whether it is brown or red) without harming other parts of the skin. Therefore, this laser can remove brown spots while leaving the surrounding skin intact.

What does the skin look like after treatment?

Each pulse of light treats approximately the size of a pencil eraser. These spots often turn pink to slightly red. Occasionally, small areas may turn a purple or blue color that can last for about a week. You may want to schedule the treatment at a time when you don’t have major social or work commitments for 2-3 days until the redness, and occasionally swelling, go down. Cover makeup can generally be used after 24 hours.
