More than 16 million Americans suffer from Rosacea, a skin disease that can have damaging physical as well as psychological effects as sufferers delay or skip social commitments out of embarrassment. The cause of this chronic condition is still unknown, but it often occurs in people who tend to blush or flush easily. During flare-ups, a patient may experience redness, flushing, red bumps and/or pus bumps on their face, which can potentially spread to their chest and back. Rosacea cannot be cured, but patients do go through periods of remission.

According to the National Rosacea Society, there are four distinct subtypes of this disease.

  1. Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea: Characterized by facial redness, visible blood vessels and possible stinging, burning or scaling.
  2. Papulopustular rosacea: Characterized by bumps, acne-like breakouts and raised red patches.
  3. Phymatous rosacea: Characterized by an enlargement of the nose from excess tissue as well as thickening of the skin.
  4. Ocular rosacea: Characterized by irrigation in the eyes, which ranges from redness to swelling and the appearance of styes.

While it may seem difficult to function socially during an outbreak, it helps to realize that even celebrities struggle with Rosacea. Among the public figures who are dealing or who dealt with the disease are Bill Clinton, Cameron Diaz, Renee Zellweger, Princess Diana and Prince William.
